This is interesting, but doesn't really get to the bottom of what changed
earlier in the week. Most of we Windows users have probably been running
that "out of the box" setup for months with no problem until a few days ago.
The only other thing that had changed on this system that might have been
a factor is that I upgraded from Microsoft Security Essentials v1.x to v2
the day before the problems stared. Suspecting this may have been a factor
I did my best to disable some of its more invasive scanning options but
I'd be lying if I said I was 100% certain it was all switched off. It
hooks fairly deeply into the OS and I'm not even sure if it generates
logs, let alone where it keeps them.
Once I started reading here I noted similar issues from people running
various flavours of Linux, so concluded that the Security Essentials thing
was probably a coincidence and that the change had been at the BBC end.
Having said that, did any of the other Windows users with the download
problems happen to have upgraded their MSE around the same time?
