Duncan, why don't you just add a module option to allow for a "mandatory reset"? This way, the default behaviour of the driver would be compatible with the past, but one may anytime enforce the new mode.

Something like "bootreset=always" or event simply "bootreset=1" would be really appreciate: it may solve also the troubles I'm experiencing with warm reboots...
