The segfault seems to come from libgcc.

Here's what I did:
make menuconfig - select target
make
-> segfault

rm -fr build_dir staging_dir
make menuconfig - enable pie
make
-> works

rm -fr build_dir/target* staging_dir/target*
make menuconfig - disable pie
make
-> works

gdb did not help much finding the exact source of the segfault.
