A new 'main" branch with different history than 'master' ????

I'd be interested in the reasons for creating such a big move.
I don't see any benefits, but just a lot of compatibility broken and adjustment necessary at multiple places. I'm really surprised that we have a vote now about something that's never been discussed or proposed at all.
