That's of course a work-around of the MTU issue. A proper fix would be
after identifying what causes that issue. 

btw. when trying setting the mtu manually, have you tried capturing
packets to see whether the lost packets exceeded the set mtu? If yes,
could you verify using the --http-debug option whether the client
receives the correct mtu?
