Haven't benchmarked them in a long time... so I suspect the numbers I 
have are not meaningful anymore.  Would be intersting to see the results.

Correct.  I had a hacked up nettrom that could understand ext3 but it 
along wih all other nettroms had to be pulled for legal reasons, so 
right now ext2 for boot is your best choice.

Rescue partition can be omitted if you wish... nfsboot or disk swap are 
equally good methods of recovery.
