Actually doing accurately timed pulses (PWM and the like) on the Pi GPIO
pins from user space is quite possible. Look for ServoBlaster (especially
the recent servod userspace daemon impelmentation) on the RaspberryPi
forums. It uses some tricks with the DMA controller to do it, and works
very well. It's probably not quite what you want, but feel free to contact
me if you want help tweaking it.
