I have just tried the 2.6.11.4 kernel and the initialisation problem is fixed
there as well:

May 9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: Linux Kernel Card Services
May 9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
May  9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:02:00.0[A] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11

May 9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: Yenta: ISA IRQ mask 0x0438, PCI irq 11
May 9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: Socket status: 30000006
May  9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:02:00.1[B] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11

May 9 16:39:58 koetsu kernel: Socket status: 30000006

But for some reason plugging and unplugging a card causes my builtin wireless card,
using the hostap_pci module, to disassociate from the network:

I'll keep trying.
