Well I guess it is shear bad luck, because if I use 
"insmod pcmcia_core probe_mem=0" then all is fine. Both my testing cards
work without any bother with CONFIG_ISA.

So I suppose some subtle change made the memory probe alter the scanned
addresses slightly, which then hit a bad spot causing the hang.

Not to matter, I can live with this bug now, may find the bad memory
address some day ...
