Whilst such an option is useful, I don't think it covers enough of the 
problem, for example, on my machine EPP is not detected even though it works. 
In order to get my scanner to work I have to hack out the test that it falls 
over on. I got as far as coding up a solution that allowed a forcemode option 
so the user could correct any incorrectly detected mode and compiling it but 
didn't get as far as testing it before a security update resulted in my 
kernel getting upgraded and the tree I had been working in was no longer 
compatible with the running kernel.

If there is any interest I'll post my diffs here for anyone else who wants to 
work in this area.
