Not sure where that part of the wiki came from. I think when omitting a
gateway, the behavior of not using a gateway makes more sense than
implicitly looking up an existing default gateway.

However, I do see the point in having support for the behavior you're
expecting as well. Maybe it would be useful to change netifd to look up
the gateway if the option is set to '*'.

Feel free to propose a patch for it.
