802.1x on wired switch and hostapd

Hi,

 *Intention *: 802.1x on a wired switch

 Now, hostapd in wired configuration can be ported on the switch for 802.1x
functionality.

Looks like hostapd is for softap functionality besides 802.1x - Making a
laptop/mobile into an access point and then lets the port authentication
through 802.1x

Since , our intention is only 802.1x on a wired switch, *is using hostapd
in wired mode*, the *optimal solution* or should we think of stripping the
soft ap functionality from hostapd code?

Is there only 802.1x mode available without softap functionality?
