Hostap with pcmciautils

After much struggle I got hostap working with gentoo.

I had to add a line to my /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file to reflect the card
(DWL-650 Rev. P1) and driver. I flashed the firmware and I was in business.

My problem is that I am now trying to get this working again on Debian Etch.
This version of Debian now uses pcmciautils instead of pcmcia-cs. I can't
get the card to work. Has anyone gotten this hostap working correctly with
pcmciautils?

Any notes or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Google has
yielded minimal results.
