FYI - you can use firmware geared for RAM, and avoid the risks of flashing.
Assuming you can find an R version of the same firmware rev.

I use this in my /etc/modprobe.conf, which triggers an 'upgrade' when 
the card is plugged in.

alias wlan0 hostap
install hostap modprobe --ignore-install hostap ; 
/usr/local/bin/prism2_srec -ir wlan0 /etc/firmware/r1010504.hex
