ap dies under high load

hello,

my access point has the following configuration:

via epia board, 600mhz, 256mb ram
netgear ma311

debian testing with kernel 2.6.7-1 (debian kernel)
hostap-driver-0.2.4 (installed manually)
wireless-tools version 27

i'm using wep and mac acl (allow policy with one mac entry).
the client is an intel centrino ipw2100.

most of the time, the ap works very well. under high load, 
however, the connection breaks down suddenly with a lot of

resetting the card (reset 0) or reloading hostap-modules didn't 
make it work again. only a system reboot had helped.
