any chance that things improve when you use the other MMCX port on the 
card?

The card (and most or all prism2/2.5 based cards) will only tx out one 
port.    If you hold it up in front of you, with the PCMCIA port to 
your right,
and the label/LED facing you, the tx port is on the bottom.
