Give up on automated scripts for now.
Try to bring card up "by hand":

modprobe hostap_pci (or whatever)
ip link set dev wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 essid "MyESSID" mode master (or managed/etc...)
ifconfig ....
ping ....

and watch/report syslog and iwconfig output.
