wlan0: SW TICK stuck

I'm getting the following on a debian unstable box, running hostapd
0.0.4 (also from debian)

wlan0: SW TICK stuck? Bits=0x0 EvStat=8003 IntEn=e018
wlan0: SW TICK stuck? Bits=0x0 EvStat=8003 IntEn=e018
wlan0: SW TICK stuck? Bits=0x0 EvStat=8003 IntEn=e018
wlan0: SW TICK stuck? Bits=0x0 EvStat=8003 IntEn=e018
wlan0: INFDROP event

the number of the sw ticks seem to once a second, and is printed 3 or 4
times before the INFDROP event is printed. As noted in
http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap/2003-July/003457.html, the
kernel was locked, and I hard reboot the system.

I'm running in bridged mode, with
/etc/network/interfaces having an entry of
iface br0 inet dhcp
         bridge_ports eth0 wlan0
         up hostapd -B /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf

to bring the ap up on boot

Linux Wireless-1 2.4.22-1-386 #9 Sat Oct 4 14:30:39 EST 2003 i686

It seems to sometimes hairball quickly, with it locking up within 40
minutes of booting.
The last few lines in my kern.log (syslog seems to have the same info),
before the reboot is two days prior.
