Ad Hoc mode above 2Mbps?

Hi all,

I have several laptops with Hostap v0.0.2 running with Redhat 9.0, 
Wireless Extension 25 in Ad-Hoc mode.
Things work great but I cannot set the bit rate to be higher than 2Mbps 
when in Ad-Hoc Mode.
    >ifconfig wlan0 rate 11M
does nothing.  The rate is still at 2M.  Is this something with the 
Ad-Hoc specs?  Is there a way to make the tx rate dynamic when in Ad-Hoc 
mode?
