Hostap will load but WILL NOT create the wlan0 interface

This is a fresh SuSE 8.0 install (minimal with pcmcia, wireless tools, and a few other odds and ends).  It uses the stock kernel and i have the kernel sources installed.  'lspci' shows the cardbus bridge (Ricoh RL5c475).

"pci=biosirq" <- with this turned on, the machine locks when it loads the pci network cards...

this setting works well with more modern hardware, but i just have a regular pentium here, and the older bios' dont like that setting.

Does any of this help??
