Thanks.  About the time you replied I determined the problem is an IRQ 
conflict:  I am using my Thinkpad's built-in winmodem using the ltmodem 
module.  I am unable to use pcmcia cards while connected/using the modem.  It 
doesn't look like I have much by way of extra IRQs to work with.  Damn PCs.  
In this day and age it shouldn't matter one whit.
