Then if that's not the problem, here's what I'm trying:

I start up the card in /etc/rc.local (if I can get it working, I can
move the initialization to a more appropriate place) trying the
following:

ifconfig eth0 down
modprobe hostap_pci
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 essid sift-holmes
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxxx [1]
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxxx [2]
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxxx [3]
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxxx [4]
/sbin/iwconfig wlan ap any
/sbin/ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.12 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255
/sbin/route add default gw 192.168.1.1

Here's what I see in dmesg:

[And about a zillion copies of this:]
wlan0: Could not find STA for this TX error

I have been using a Mandrake 9.0 kernel. I believed that it was
patched for the wireless extensions. I could be wrong about that ---
would that explain the above kind of errors?

Anyway, the system just comes up in a totally bollixed-up state:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11-b ESSID:"test"
          Mode:Master Frequency:2.422GHz Access Point: 00:06:25:09:A8:4A
          Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power:-17 dBm Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:xxxx-xxxx-xx Encryption mode:restricted
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Seeming to have ignored all my iwconfig commands. I reissue them from
the console, but still don't get good behavior. Pings of the WAP
fail, leaving me with this statistical information:

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:06:25:09:A8:4A
          inet addr:192.168.1.12 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:22 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:339 errors:339 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:4030 (3.9 Kb) TX bytes:42702 (41.7 Kb)
          Interrupt:10 Memory:d907b000-d907c000

Note that I seem to be RECEIVING fine, but all transmissions fail.
Reinvoking iwconfig gives me the following settings, which look ok to
me (but I'm dumb about this):

wlan0 IEEE 802.11-b ESSID:"sift-holmes"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437GHz Access Point: 00:06:25:67:22:82
          Bit Rate:2Mb/s Tx-Power:-15 dBm Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:xxxx-xxxx-xx Encryption mode:restricted
          Power Management:off
Link Quality:64/92 Signal level:-62 dBm Noise level:-100 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Again, my profuse apologies if I'm just doing something obviously
stupid. And my profound gratitude to anyone who can set me straight!

Best,
R
