ad-hoc works but master does not

I need NAT so that both machines can get on the network? my problem is
either the laptop can get to other machines or the access point can. if
the laptop is online thru the ap then the ap can't see the network and
vice versa.

ideally the ap can act normally (i can ssh to and from it, etc) plus it
is an access point...meaning it's wireless clients can also get on the
network. it seems that when the machine is acting as an ap it can not
get on the network, etc.

i have iwconfig, etc

as soon as i "ifconfig br0 192.168.1.1 up" the access point comes off
the network.
