Simon, you can always use GiP itself to query a PID string:

get_iplayer --pid=<PID> -i

The PID string is unique to a BBC prog, be it radio or TV or
whatever else (online video/audio clip), the metadata associated
with it remains on line even after the prog has expired from iPlayer.

But, since a browser is most likely to be running on a system,
Shevek's suggestion is more practical; TBH, I had long ago
myself bookmarked
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/pid
in my browser (Firefox); invoking it of course results in a
"Sorry, that page was not found" message, but overwriting
"pid" in the address bar with the actual string and clicking the
"go" arrow gets me to where I want to go easily...

Incidentally,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes
informs me that a staggering total of
3,602,487 TV+Radio programmes
(increasing as I write...) have been
catalogued there...

Kindest regards,
Vangelis.
