Android / get_iplayer idiot guide ?

Being involved in computing and technology for many years, I have a fair 
idea of what is involved, but I am struggling to get my head round 
Android, and more specifically get_iplayer.  Having read as much as I 
can absorb (but not as much as I would have been!) so far I am unable to 
find any clear advice on whether or not it is possible to use 
get_iplayer running under Android, and with or without 'rooting'.

Any help would be gratefully received.
