strange downloading issues in various Linux

Just recently I have had trouble with get_iplayer in Mint 13 and 
openSUSE 12.2
It fetches the list OK
But a download (and this is the trouble, it varies) Locks up or starts 
briefly then goes zipping on to 300% and stops.

Stranger still, I have a identical install of openSUSE 12.2 on a laptop 
and this is working.

Would a --debug on a download help? Or suggestions..?
