Well they certainly look different. In all honesty I'm not sure. It could be something as simple as the Sony is better at upscaling, but it could be the feed to the Sony is just better? You'd have to get a log of the connection stuff and try and see what is happening. Even if there is a better feed, it might all be to nothing as you may not be able to get that specific feed with get_iplayer. 

Does something like Virgin have a better iPlayer feed as well?
