Sure, but the surrounding infrastructure for periodic repetition of
these in cxacru is almost exact copy of that in speedtch, and IIRC so is
that in amedyn.  So one can put the heartbeat in the usbatm, and make it
call subdriver-supplied function to query the modem status, if needed.
