thanks for the supporting feedback so far.
I've prepared the removal in a staging tree here, in case somebody is interested:
https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/staging/adrian.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/rem419
(The relevant part are mostly the kernel switch/package removals).
If I don't receive any contrary response over the next 1-2 weeks, I'd apply this patchset at some point.
