To avoid losing information, I'd suggest to write it down in a wiki page 
in the

developer section https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-developer/start

open this (currently empty) page and write it here

https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-developer/sysupgrade-process

You don't need to worry too much about formatting and making it look cool,

I will do that when you're done.

I'm afraid that waiting for people to decide where they want

to bikeshed the developer docs will end nowhere, just like it did in the 
past.
