so I did the whole set of original code
- works without DEBUG_VIRTUAL
- breaks with DEBUG_VIRTUAL
and then applied you suggested change to __phys_addr_symbol,
which fixes the breakage. And I guess making this usable at all
times also makes a lot of sense, so
