Uh, still not good... Please continue using the patched kernel (or
2.6.16-rc1, which has the patch in it) for the continued testing. My new
assumption is that firmware loading is broken. What does 

	grep firmware /etc/udev/rules.d/*

and

	grep firmware /etc/hotplug/*

result in?
