Im really sorry for wasting your time, there is no problem.  I believe I have
maybe used a .config for too long.  
I did what I should have done before, and started from scratch, with a blank
.config, and it worked perfectly.

I should have tried that before filling in a bug report, but compipling a 2.6.x
kernel on a P2-266 takes a while ;)
