Summary: xircom_cb causes lockup with Xircom RBEM56G-100 card
Kernel Version: 2.6.8.1
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Owner: rmk at arm.linux.org.uk
Submitter: wilburpan at hotmail.com
Distribution: Gentoo
Hardware Environment: Dell Inspiron 5000e notebook, Xircom RBEM56G-100
ethernet/modem card
Software Environment: Gnome 2.6.2, Xorg-X11-6.7.0
Problem Description:
I am running a very up to date Gentoo system, using GCC 3.4, udev, Xorg, and
Gnome. I am having problems with my Xircom card locking up on logout from
Gnome. This is what happens with the 2.6.8.1 kernel (xdm is the Gentoo startup
script to run the display manager of your choice on startup):
1. With xdm in my startup sequence, Gnome starts fine, but when I log out of the
session, my screen goes blank and the keyboard dies on me. Only a hard reset
gets me out of this.
2. Again with xdm in my startup sequence, if I immediately go to shut down or
reboot the computer without logging in as a user, the computer does so without
problems.
3. If I take xdm out of the startup sequence so that I start in console mode,
and use startx to start Gnome, I can start and stop Gnome without any problems.
4. If I start in console mode, manually start /etc/init.d/xdm, and log in as a
user, then my computer hangs on logout again.
My logs don't give me much help.
I am pretty sure that this is related to xircom_cb. If I remove xircom_cb and
use xircom_tulip_cb instead, I am able to logout without locking up my computer
but a new problem shows up in that I lose networking. This issue appears to be
an arp-cache problem. I'll probably file a separate bug on this.
The reason I am interested in xircom_cb is that:
1. It is listed as being the "new" driver for Xircom cards
2. It appears to be the driver of choice that gets loaded using either the
Gentoo LiveCD or the latest Knoppix CD.
