[Linux-parport] reading parallel status register

Hi all,
I can use help on how to read a bit from parallel port status register. I use perl to write a real time program using the parallel port as HW interface.
in the program I use LP function to write and read from /dev/parport0 and it works fine for the data register, but I need also to control other port registers namely the status and control registers.
How can I tell the port that I need now read a bit from the Status register instead the data register.
