Support for SST 39VF6402B has been officially added or I need to patch the kernel?

This is my report:

Kernel: 2.6.37

toolchain: fgiovagnini at aurio01:~/sh7203/sh7203-uclinux-4.4-206/sh-2.6-
v2.6.37/sh-2.6$ sh-uclinux-gcc -v

Target: sh-uclinux
gcc version 4.4.1 (Sourcery G++ Lite 4.4-206)

I attach my .config file

The driver of MTD (drivers/mtd/chip/cfi_cmdset_0002.c) says into the function:
static void fixup_old_sst_eraseregion(struct mtd_info *mtd)
{
	struct map_info *map = mtd->priv;
	struct cfi_private *cfi = map->fldrv_priv;

	/*
	 * These flashes report two seperate eraseblock regions based on the
	 * sector_erase-size and block_erase-size, although they both operate on
the
	 * same memory. This is not allowed according to CFI, so we just pick the
	 * sector_erase-size.
	 */
	cfi->cfiq->NumEraseRegions = 1;
}

The secot size is 0x1000, as written into the datasheet:
• Sector-Erase Capability
 – Uniform 2 KWord sectors
• Block-Erase Capability
 – Uniform 32 KWord blocks

BUT:
mkfs.jffs2 --eraseblock=0x1000 is NOT ALLOWED if you do not modify the
mkfs.jffs2.c as I did:
I commented the line in red:

			case 'e': {
						  char *next;
						  unsigned units = 0;
						  erase_block_size = strtol(optarg, &next, 0);
						  if (!erase_block_size)
							  errmsg_die("Unrecognisable erase
size\n");

						  if (*next) {
							  if (!strcmp(next, "KiB")) {
								  units = 1024;
							  } else if (!strcmp(next, "MiB")) {
								  units = 1024 * 1024;
							  } else {
								  errmsg_die("Unknown units in
erasesize\n");
							  }
						  } else {
							  if (erase_block_size < 0x1000)
								  units = 1024;
							  else
								  units = 1;
						  }
						  erase_block_size *= units;

						  /* If it's less than 8KiB, they're not allowed
*/
						  if (erase_block_size < 0x2000) {
							// Modify done by Fabio Giovagnini
							  //fprintf(stderr, "Erase size 0x%x too
small. Increasing to 8KiB minimum\n",
							  	//	  erase_block_size);
							  //erase_block_size = 0x2000;
						  }
						  break;
					  }

In this way I can mount rootfs and I can execute my init program

This is all teh stuff.
I ASK:
why 8KiB of minimum size of erase blobk?

Thanks
