flash_to_file() and file_to_flash() in mtd_debug.c

Hi,

I couldn't connect to the mail archive. So please forgive me if this
has been asked before. 

Why the two functions flash_to_file() and file_to_flash() in
mtd_debug.c?
I mean is it possible to do the flash device read/write using dd?
