The box running the mailing list now has SpamAssassin installed so you
should see less spam than before -- not that we really got that much
anyway.
I also have some other filters in place -- if you attempt to start a new
thread by replying to an old message and modifying the Subject line,
hence sending a mail with a References: header showing it's part of the
original thread, but in fact bearing no relation to that thread, that'll
get rejected too.

Likewise if you send a reply which _lacks_ both In-Reply-To: and
References: headers -- proper email clients are available for free
download, even for Windows users, so there's no excuse for that either.
