mtd patch on 2.2.16

Hi

I am new to mtd stuff and I am trying to install mtd layer on 2.2.16(I have 
to use only this version for certain reasons). When followed to do HOWTO 
stuff, I am having problems patching 'mtd-patch-2.2.16'. Do I have to change 
the patch file as I don't see any of those paths on my system or do I have 
to follow a different method to install it. Please give me a pointer.
