Yeah, that seems like a valuable thing to do.

That makes some sense to me.

What I'll do is introduce gtdt_v3 in a first patch, making sure that
the parser is correctly handling the difference (pointer arithmetic
and such), and then add the virtual timer interrupt handling in a
subsequent change.
