That's how I intend to implement support for this in LLDB.
if (setExactWatchpoint())
  return true; // watchpoint set, new kernel
if (setApproxWatchpoint())
  return true; // watchpoint set, old kernel
return false; // watchpoints not working

seems straight-forward enough to me.
