I'd prefer that too, but the problem is we may want to have the ability 
to auto-update the portal content when issuing a new release, which 
would typically be done by issuing 'make dist-up'.

I'll hold off adding this html content to the git repo for now then, 
since I can't say if/how we'll need to automate it. But if I find it can 
make everybody's lives easier by automating the provision of up to date 
data to our users when we release, it'll go straight in. As far as I'm 
concerned, keeping a git repo "clean" will always come with a much lower 
priority than ensuring we always provide the best possible data to the 
largest number of users.
