[Freeassociation-devel] Warnings to the Max

So now I committed lots of extra compiler warnings (for gcc and clang).
I may have gone overboard; there are now almost 500 compiler warnings.

most of them are of the unsed variable or set-and-unused variable type.
but there are plenty of others that deserve a review and probably fixup.

if anyone feels like cleaning up this old code, please do. make a pull request on github.
