Do you have the libtool m4 macros installed?

I have:
/usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4:AU_ALIAS([AM_PROG_LIBTOOL], [LT_INIT])

$ dpkg -L libtool | grep m4
/usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/ltoptions.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/ltsugar.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/argz.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/ltversion.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/lt~obsolete.m4

I'm just guessing, though.
