Hmm... seems I spoke a little too soon.  Bugger refuses to 'ifup' now with 
WEP, started getting those pesky "requeueing command 0x0016 due to timeout" 
followed shortly thereafter by a kernel oops.  There must be some kind of 
race condition somewhere, or something going rotten in the firmware, since 
the more I play with it the more obstinate the thing becomes.  Once it DOES 
associate and dhcpd does its thing, it's rock solid.  A little thirsty on the 
power consumption side but the link stays up...
