Actually, it might really be easier to have your own git repository
anyway.  It's not like CVS; you can commit/branch/etc to your own
repository without any 'upstream' approval, and it doesn't make any
difference to "upstream" whatsoever unless they choose for it to.

At the same time, using git to generate the diffs you post to the list
will mean that they're more easily consumable when others want them (in
that they can read the diff in email, but still pull changesets without
worrying about email formatting and such), and also allow you to manage
changes in your own tree.

No pressure either way ;)
