I have tested few routers and the results are:

router size diskfree memfree

tp-link wdr3600 256 1292k 88600k
tp-link wdr3600 512 1360k 82784k
tp-link wdr3600 1024 1492k 77656k

d-link dir615h2 256 96k 7420k
d-link dir615h2 512 328k 4500k
d-link dir615h2 1024 400k 3696k

nexx wt3020h 256 1168k 27416k
nexx wt3020h 512 1312k 21652k
nexx wt3020h 1024 1404k 16892k

for me personally 512 seems a reasonable choice.
