OK, I found the issue: it's me :)
I use extroot, and when I mounted /overlay from the USB stick I evidently restored the opkg status database of the 17.01.3, which caused the kernel mismatch.
So, it was Jo-Phillip that pointed me in the right direction:
//Is it possible that you backed up the entire overlay and then restored it? That would overwrite the opkg status database in "/usr/lib/opkg/status" and cause the system to think that older kmods are installed.//
This time I copied /overlay from internal memory to extroot on USB before enabling the latter and all worked as a charm.
