I extraced the sysupgrade image with "binwalk" and checked the version of the embedded kmods, they are all in the expected version.

If it possible that you backed up the entire overlay and then restored it? That would overwrite the opkg status database in "/usr/lib/opkg/status" and cause the system to think that older kmods are installed.
