Might be that I do not get your issue, but LEDE is fine with any kind of special characters in the ssid. In fact, I've tried the worse I can imagine and used emojis.

My LEDE 17.01.3 client is perfect fine connected to a LEDE snapshot image broadcasting a SSID containing emojis (see attached screenshot).

But since your report is about the long outdated openwrt barrier breaker (released 30-Sep-2014) and doesn't give me any hint that you gave LEDE a try, I tend to close this report as invalid anyway.
